The Facebook Virus… Beware!

Facebook virus is affecting the popular social networking site

“Hey, I have this hilarious video of you dancing. Your face is so red. You should check it out”.

If you’ve received a message like that through Facebook or MySpace, you may have been exposed to the “Koobface” virus.

Koobface” comes through an e-mail sent by one of your social networking site friends inviting you to scope out a video.

Once the URL is clicked, “Koobface” prompts you to update your Flash player before the video can be displayed. Therein lies the virus, cloaked in a “flash_player.exe” file. According to the Kaspersky Lab, an antivirus organization working closely with Facebook, “the worms transform victim machines into zombie computers to form botnets.”

Facebook virus is basically a “Koobface” virus whose primary target is the Facebook users. This virus which targets Facebook users, compose a spam message and then send this message to the infected users’ friends using the messaging system on Facebook. This virus aims at installing Trojan software on the infected user’s computer system and then carrying out its related task for which it is designed. The spam message includes links which redirects to several anonymous websites that in actual are the spoofing and phishing websites.

Manual Removal:

STEP 1: Terminate the following processes:

  • fbtre6.exe
  • mstre6.exe

STEP 2: Delete the below mentioned registry values:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run\”systray” = “c:\windows\mstre6.exe”
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run\”systray” = “C:\Windows\fbtre6.exe”
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\Explorer\Navigating

STEP 3: After deleting the registry entries, delete these files:

  • C:\\Windows\\fbtre6.exe
  • C:\\Windows\\fmark2.dat
